7 Reasons Sugar is a Bad Boy and 7 Ways to Beat it. Refined-Carb-Free Pizza

How many teaspoons of sugar do you think there are in one (just one) can of Coke?

Any guesses?



Frikin’ 10!!!!

80% of foods sold in the US contain added sugar. Knowing that sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine, does this not make you wonder why?.. My relationship with sugar has definitely gone a little too far.

1. Is bad for your teeth
2. Overloads your liver
3. Turns into fat if you have too much
4. Raises cholesterol levels
5. Leads to diabetes (type 1 and type 2)
6. Spikes your blood sugar levels and leads to mood swings (hello PMS)
7. Is highly addictive (8 times more addictive than cocaine!)

But you cannot allow it to win!! I found that these are the best steps for me to beat sugar:
1. Have less sugar (ha!)
2. Replace sweetness with natural sugars
3. Avoid white bread, white pasta, or any refined carbs
4. Cook at home (where you know how much sugar goes into your food)
5. Choose savoury / neutral snacks over sweet ones
6. Get out of habit of having dessert
7. Drink a LOT of water / herbal tea

To help you make your fist step painless, you get to have your favourite food – pizza! Yay! And this pizza is refined-carb-free!! Beat sugar with it.

Cauliflower Pizza Dough Ingredients (1 Pizza for a hungry person):
1 Cauliflower head
Half a cup of grated mozzarella cheese (you can use parmesan too)
Salt and pepper

1. Heat the over up to 180C.
If you have a food processor, chop up the cauliflower into cous-cous type of texture. If you don’t, cover your kitchen in cauliflower puree by trying to blend it (like me),  and then give up and grate it (which is a lot quicker than you expect, although covers the rest of the kitchen in cauliflower chunks).

2. Boil the cauliflower until ‘al dente’, for about 7 minutes. Drain well, pop it in a towel or a cheese cloth, twist, and show your muscles. Squeeze as much liquid out of it as you can.

3. Mix the (hopefully dry-ish) cauliflower ‘rice’ with grated mozzarella cheese, salt and pepper and lay out on a greaseproof baking sheet into a pizza-base shape. Get creative if you like.

4. Bake for about 15-20 minutes until the crust is ready.

5. Put your sauce and toppings on and bake until the cheese melts and browns.

If you’re worried, you can hardly taste the cauliflower if you’re worried.  Hugo couldn’t recognise what’s different about the pizza for a while. I kind of preferred it to a normal pizza because it’s cheesier and you don’t feel so lethargic after it. You can finish the whole thing guilt-free!
